You’ve heard of food to-go, but how about jewelry to-go?Cheryl Kerr, the owner and designer, for Winnipeg-based Stellar Designs Jewelry, embraced the look of the famous take-out box, and used it to market her one-of-a-kind jewelry creations.
After completing an Engineering Degree and working as an engineer on gas turbine engines, Cheryl Kerr (P.Eng) decided to use her knowledge of metal and raw materials for something feminine: jewelry!
It all started off when she purchased too much material than needed to design a single piece of jewelry for herself. Cheryl decided that the only way she was going to recuperate some of her costs was by selling a few pieces to her family, friends and co-workers. And what an idea! Her designs took off like a rocket. It wasn’t long before her phone began ringing with people that have head of her unique designs. It got so busy, in fact, that she had to hire on her sister, Alison to help keep up with the increased sales!
In an attempt to follow a dream of being an entrepreneur, and to satisfy a growing urge to stand out with jewelry fashion, Cheryl registered a business "Stellar Designs", and scheduled herself as a vendor in local craft shows. Stellar Designs were an instant success. The funky designs coupled with the clever packaging, made them the perfect gift to-go! It wasn’t long before Stellar Designs became the busiest and most recognized table at every show they participated in! It doesn't help that the sisters are entertainment themselves! Their playfullness is evident in their designs!
And it shows…Stellar Designs has a regular following of customers that follow the "Stellar Sisters" from show to show in order to get the newest styles. People were even making appointments to view the jewerly in-between show dates! Stellar jewelry is becoming so popular that without any encouragement, customers request to host jewelry parties to showcase their jewelry to their friends and family!
Cheryl and Alison realize that styles and trends are forever changing, and use that knowledge to continually add to their collections. They use the latest colours and fashion styles in all of their hand-made designs through the use of vibrant beads, stones, and hand set crystals.
The necklace pendants are made from Aluminum and are twisted, bent and morphed into funky and stylish one-of-a-kind designs. The pendants are then embellished with various beads and crystals, making them eye-catching, must-have accessories, for either a day at the office, or a night on the town.!
The choice to use Aluminum was an easy choice for Cheryl, who is a registered Professional Engineer. " Because of my experience as an Engineer, I am familiar with most metals and their properties. Aluminum is an extremely ductile and lightweight metal, which allow the designs to have a heavy stylish look, but still remains very lightweight and comfortable." She also mentions that Aluminum is hypoallergenic and perfect for those who have allergies to other metal jewelry, and since it doesn’t tarnish like silver, it is very easy to care for.
